The Court of Appeal recently reduced the sentence of a sex offender from 23 years and six months' imprisonment with 16 whippings to 12 years' jail with 10 whippings after revising the totality principles.

Norin bin Pungut Yussof pleaded guilty to charges of repeated offences ofrapeandunlawful carnal knowledge on two vulnerable victims. "There was sexual grooming, there were photographs involved and Norin
was in a position of trust that the girls were sexually experienced," Justices John Barry Mortimer, Leonard and Burrell said in their judgement.

However, the appellate court also found that the overall sentence is excessive and reduced it in recognition of Norin's clear record and his guilty pleas.

Norin was represented by lawyer Pengiran Khairul Nizam bin Pengiran Yassin.

DPP Sharon appeared as respondent in the appeal.
