MAKASSAR, INDONESIA

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has accepted a proposal from Culture and Education Minister Muhadjir Effendy to conduct a moratorium on the national exams, but the move has yet to be approved.

“It [the proposal] is still being processed. It has not been [discussed] in any Cabinet meetings so far,” Jokowi said in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Friday night.

He said a future Cabinet meeting that had yet to be scheduled would decide whether the proposal would be implemented or not.

“If they [the national exams] are still needed, as we need to check the standard of our education quality, we may still keep the exams,” he added.

Earlier on Friday, Muhadjir said the moratorium on the national exams could be started next year.

He said the move to suspend the exams was part of Jokowi’s "Nawacita", the President’s nine-point policy agenda, as the exams were not be used as a gauge for “measuring the national education system”. (jun)
