Several students from Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTE Tutong) recently obtained excellent results in the United Kingdom Chemistry Olympiad organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).
Two gold certificates, one silver certificate and six bronze certificates were won for the school.
Nur Amirah binti Zainal Arfan from Year 13 bagged the highest score and gold.
Maimunah Fa'izun binti Haji Abdul Rahman from Year 12 bagged the other gold award.
Teo Zhi Perng, another Year 12 student bagged the only silver award.
The other students who were awarded bronzes were Batriysia binti Sukarneva (Year 13), Naziana binti Gudi (Year 13), Eugene Lim (Year 13), Soon Chin Yee (Year 13), Amila Fashihah binti Abu Bakar (Year 13), and Alex Brandon Wong (Year 12).
Onn Chee Sheng, a Chemistry tutor at the college, is an accredited Member of RSC (MRSC), and PTE Tutong as a school become affiliated to the RSC in early 2015.
The competition is financially supported by INEOS, the world's third largest producer of chemicals. There was no registration fee involved.
"This is an excellent achievement by all those involved in what is a very challenging competition. This will no doubt give the students great confidence and encouragement for their future studies in Chemistry at A Level and beyond. Well done to all those who took part," said Bryan Haysum, Head of Science.
The extremely challenging competition, which is opened to all schools in the UK, is an opportunity to stretch and challenge the most able post-16 Chemistry students by testing their chemical knowledge.
Schools located outside the UK are only able to participate in round one, but are not eligible to proceed to round two, according to a press release from PTE Tutong.
Schools outside the UK are provided with electronic certificates for gold, silver and bronze categories, and grade boundaries will be based on UK scores.
The competition started with Round 1 - this consisted of a written paper, of a much higher standard than AS or A2 examinations, taken in school.
The questions posed in Round 1 are usually interesting and challenging on real and relevant chemistry, raising awareness of what the subject is all about beyond the boundaries of 'A' Level syllabus.
A total of nine students from PTE Tutong, comprising six Year 13 and three Year 12 students sat for the Round 1 two-hour Olympiad.
Tackling the Round 1 paper also provides a good opportunity to develop some of the skills required for studies at university and beyond.
The questions do not rely on the relatively easy recall of information which students may have met before, but instead on thinking and trying to work out answers to unfamiliar questions - this is much more difficult!
Nur Amirah binti Zainal Arfan, in an interview said, "I would recommend students to participate in RSC Chemistry Olympiad as it helps to expand their knowledge beyond their school syllabus, thus making life exciting and competing to be the best. To be honest, I was not quite satisfied with my time management as I was unable to understand some of the questions being asked. I even had to do a trial and error method in filling one of the tables in the Olympiad since there were only five minutes remaining. I feel having read up on recent science advances can help to deepen passion and intrigue for the sciences."
