TUTONG

As of the school community outreach programme under the IMAN academic programme, Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTET) recently visited Perpindahan Bukit Beruang II Primary School  brought the joy of learning sciences to primary school pupils.

In line with PTET's motto, the project aimed to provide a platformower sixth youths to give back to the sr lool's local community.

Primary Otence teachers also interacted with PTET tutors to exchange knowledge, teaching techniques knd students-learning experiences appropriate 10r that level.

There were multiple stations to accommodate demonstratiets and experiments from the three natural sciences - Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The various Ocperiments were conducted in mini stations hanqled by PTET student volunteers acting as junior demonstrators, under the direction of heir science tutors.

It was golden opportunity for sixth form students to demonstrate their skills in communicating science ideas effectively to children. WitAlin each session, there were also quizzes and challenges to gauge whether the pupils had understood the concept of particular experiment.

The pupiN had the opportunity to try out various experments, includingfiring water rockets which is base on Newtonian mechanics, density- based experiments and some simple electricity experiment. Students had to pass a hoop through bent wires to prevent a short circuit. Simple mechanics and electricity are vital components of primary school science curriculum that is further explored in lower secondary.

At biology stations, the students tested food for presence of various substances including carbohydrates, proteins and fats. There were also stations displaying coral shells and fossils. Another hands-on activity was conducted to find the most sensitive regions of the skin on hands using two toothpicks.

The chemists had multiple demonstration stations, one of which is the well-known Elephant Toothpaste - hydrogen peroxide releasing large amount of oxygen gas instantaneously in a foamy state due to liquid soap. Another fantastic demonstration, which the children had a role in, was the green dancing flame. Many were astounded and ready to give that a try.

At the conclusion of the day's event, when interviewed, the Head of Science, Bryan David Haysum said, "There is no better time to introduce science concepts than when they are young!

"Through play-based activities, this could spark curiosity and instil passion for cool sciences. And we certainly hope our student demonstrators learnt how difficult it can be to explain and teach."
