No disruption in normal lives but expect beefed-up security, Malacañang says
The public can still have normal lives despite the government’s decision to raise the terror alert level 3 across the country, Malacañang said on Thursday, December 1.
Presidential communications secretary Martin Andanar, however, said the public should expect intensified security measures such as mobile checkpoints amid terror threats, admitting that there is “no such thing as perfect security.”
“We assure the public that there will be no disruption in their normal lives even if we have raised our security level in the same vein that there was no change in the way they live, work, or conduct business now that the country is under state of national emergency on the account of lawless violence,” Andanar said.
Philippine National Police director general Ronald dela Rosa has raised the country’s terror alert level following the arrest of two suspects behind the botched bombing near the United States embassy in Manila. Dela Rosa urged the public to remain calm yet vigilant as authorities move to quell terror threats.
Andanar said the police force have been placed “in extreme alert for terrorists who might commit similar acts of planting bombs in Metro Manila.” Additional security measures will be taken such intensified mobile checkpoints, intelligence activities and law enforcement operations.
“There is no such thing as perfect security but what is more important is authorities have successfully disarmed an improvised explosive device (IED) which could have wreaked havoc to the lives of our people,” Andanar said.
He said placing the Philippines under terror alert level 3 is consistent with the President’s declaration of state of national emergency on account of lawless violence in Mindanao last September.
