WEATHER UPDATE FOR BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 04 DECEMBER 2016 (NORTHEAST MONSOON 2016)
The onset of Northeast Monsoon is expected over Brunei Darussalam by mid December 2016 until March 2017. For the first half of the monsoon season (December-January, the country will normally experience very active weather conditions with heavy and prolonged rain and thunderstorms, especially during the night and early morning.
Based on current regional weather situation and latest seasonal forecasts from the leading world climate centres, La• Nina conditions have been observed over the Pacific Ocean, and are slightly favoured (55% chancel to persist through February 2017. This phenomenon is associated with the enhancement of rainfall over the Southeast Asian region. including Brunei Darussalam. However, the total amount of rainfall for December 2016 to January 2016 is forecasted to be normal (i.e. climate averages of 3. mm and 271 mm for December and January respectively,.
From our climate records. the months of December and January are known to have the highest amount of rainfall in comparison to the other months of the year. in light of this. the general public. road users and mariners, are advised to always be alert and to take necessary precautionary actions to ensure safety, especially during heavy rain and thunderstorms. It is important to note that risks of flash floods and flooding at low•lying and flood.prone areas, and risks of landslides can occur. especially during moderate to heavy rainfall of more than 2 hours. Risk of severe flash flooding may occur when prolonged he, downpour coincides with high tide. Strong surges from the Northeasterly winds may also result in the increase of wave height OvCf Brunei Waters to Rough State (above 2.0 mi.
