YSEALI- Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative, President Obama’s signature program for youths in ASEAN to nurture leadership and cultivate networks with 4 leading themes: Environment, Education, Entrepreneurship and Civil Engagement.
Project Leader and YSEALI alumna, Pg Mas Dino Pg Hj Radin Hanafi received a grant by the US State Department administered by World Learning to carry out her farm-to-school project called ‘Farm Up Your Life!’ with the goal to empower youths towards sustainability and resilience through experiential learning. The project has 4 objectives: sustainable food systems, waste management, environmental stewardship and nutrition. Noting an opportunity to introduce and encourage farming in schools, Pg Mas Dino engaged with Yayasan Primary School to start her pilot programme with 50 students aged between 9-12. With the help of 15 volunteers, she set up a farm installation at their school using wooden pallets, plastic bottles and tires to grow over 10 kinds of vegetables and fruits as well as teaching them culinary skills to empower them to make smart, healthy choices with their diet. Her workshop launched on October 1st with the closing on YOUnified (3rd Dec) taking place at the Food Jungle, the organic farm of her project partner. There, the students had first-hand experience with work on the farm from composting to feeding chickens to harvesting plants from the aquaponics setup. Other activities included making ice cream from frozen fruits and drawing posters based on their ideal world and it was noted that all of them had one thing in common- nature played a big part in what they thought was their perfect world. The other objective of the project is also to build and nurture young leaders by encouraging them to be active participants in their community and they, like the YSEALI tagline are ‘Never Too Young to Lead’.
With ‘Farm Up Your Life!’, it is intended to making growing food more fun and educational. It is hoped that with the success of this project that similar programmes may be carried out in other schools.
