Bud the parrot could provide key testimony in a murder trial of a woman accused of shooting her husband five times before turning the gun on herself.
Glenna Durham, 46, spent months in hospital recovering from a gunshot wound to her head, but is now well enough to appear in court.
There were no witnesses to what happened on May 12 last year – except the grey parrot.
Since that day, he has been repeating, ‘Don’t f***ing shoot! ‘Don’t f***ing shoot’!’
Prosecutors argue that he overheard these words during the altercation between Glenna and her partner Martin Durham, 45, at their home in Michigan.
They allegedly had a row about gambling debts and unpaid bills before Glenna seized the gun and blasted her husband before shooting herself in the head.
She appeared in court for the first time on Friday after spending the last year recovering in hospital.
During the hearing, neighbour Connie Ream said she was the one to find the couple, after hearing gunshots.
At first she thought Martin was hunting, but when she checked on them saw two bodies motionless on the floor.
Another witness said the house looked ‘ransacked’ with things scattered everywhere.
Glenna has denied shooting anyone that day.
But police reportedly found a note at their home to their three children reading: ‘Please forgive me [you’re] one of the best things I ever did — Love mom.’
Martin’s ex-wife Christine, now looking after the parrot, has said she believes the bird repeated her former husband’s last words.
It allegedly also remembered the start of the argument as well, repeating words including ‘Get out’ and ‘Where will I go?’
Prosecutor Robert Springstead said: ‘It is something we are going to be looking at to determine if it’s reliable to use or if it’s information we need to prosecute this case.’
