SEMPORNA
In the heat of Thursday night’s gunbattle with notorious cross border kidnap group members, an elite police Tiger Platoon policeman did not even notice that he was hit.
“I did not realise that I was shot. It was only after the firing ended, I felt a sharp pain in my leg,” said the 30-year-old lance corporal Mohd Syafik Lagu Abdullah.
The officer, who is with the General Operations Force, recounted that he was standing on the upper side of the fishing trawler when gunmen tried to board.
“I heard shouts of ‘police’ and immediately took position as the gunmen wanted to scale our boat,” he said from his hospital bed.
The gunmen started to open fire.
“Everything went very fast, maybe in a minute,” he said, adding that he was not sure when he was hit.
He was flown back from the scene to the Semporna hospital where he was given treatment.
The father of two children said his wife had been very anxious since she was told about him being shot.
“I told them not to worry and to remain calm,” he said, adding that he hoped to be transferred to Tawau hospital to be closer to his wife and children.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun visited the lance corporal at the hospital yesterday.
