The Borneo Post won the National Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Media Award 2016 here on Thursday.

Aiman Ashari, advertising manager for See Hua Marketing Sdn Bhd – the marketing arm of The Borneo Post, See Hua Daily News, and Utusan Borneo – received the award from Minister of Human Resources Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem.

The National OSH Award 2016 honours industry players for their commitment to uplifting OSH in 20 different categories.

Other East Malaysian industry players who shared the limelight were winners of the Forestry Award (Rakyat Berjaya Sdn Bhd, Sabah), Storage Award (Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, Bintulu Integrated Facility), and Public Service and Local Government Award (Kuching North City Commission).

Meanwhile, Riot also launched the 2016 to 2020 Occupational Safety and Health Strategic Plan for Small and Medium Industries to reduce industrial accident rates in this sector, which makes up 97 per cent of Malaysia’s industry profile.

He said it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure a safe, healthy, accident- and disease-free workplace.

“This is because a positive work environment will contribute to the increase in quality of working life, hence boosting productivity. A work environment that is conducive, safe and healthy will foster productivity, creativity and innovation from a pool of healthy workers. The increased productivity will then boost the competitiveness of the workers and the organisations they belong to,” he said.

“Our nation is in need of workers who are healthy, productive and innovative to achieve the aspirations of the 11th Malaysia Plan, Government Transformation Plan (GTP) and Economic Transformation Plan (ETP). Therefore, creating a culture of prevention in occupational safety and health practice is one of the key components of the wellbeing of employees, employers, the people and nation.”

He stressed the importance of the Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan 2020 (OSH-MP 2020), which focuses on the practice of preventive culture to invigorate a safe and healthy work culture among employees and employers.

“The industrial accident rate for 2015 is 2.81 fatalities per 1,000 workers versus 3.10 fatalities per 1,000 workers in 2014.

“The Ministry of Human Resources is not resting on its laurels. There is so much room for improvement and so much more to be done as OSH remains the top priority of the ministry,” he said.
