Preparations to hold events for upcoming Yuletide events at renowned Malacca’s floating eatery-The Seafarer Restaurant at Klebang Besar here went up in smoke after fire ravaged the decade-old wooden structure.
Proprietor of the restaurant, Mike Thien was in a sombre mood upon witnessing that his restaurant that served authentic Peranakan dishes was totally ruined in the fire which broke out at 5.10pm on Tuesday.
“I built this restaurant from my own blood, sweat and tears.
“My heart sank to see the fire spreading rapidly and I could only watch helplessly,” he told The Star.
Thien said he had planned Christmas and New Year events at the restaurant since last month.
“I have sent out dozens of invitations and now have to find an alternative venue at which to hold these events, as I don’t want to disappoint the revellers,” he said.
Thien said the restaurant was first opened in early 2000 and he made an effort to promote it as an outlet serving authentic Baba and Nyonya menus here.
He said apart from food, the restaurant was also a venue for a number of charity events.
Malacca's Fire and Rescue Department’s spokesman said 80% of the restaurant had been ravaged in the fire,
He said 18 personnel form Kubu and Tangga Batu Fire and Rescue stations managed to douse the fire in about 30 minutes.
