Brunei’s elite junior swimmer, Nur Haziq bin Samil, had a great outing during the 40th South East Asia Age Group Swimming Championships in Bangkok, Thailand from 9 – 11 December 2016.
On the first day of competition, Nur Haziq bin Samil won the race in heat 1 and touched the pad with a time of 4:33.24s for the 400m Freestyle. This broke the Brunei's Age Group (Group 2: 14-15 years old) record time held by Anderson Lim, Brunei's ex Olympian since year 2010. The old time was 4:33.86s set during the Interclub Swimming Championships in Brunei.
“Haziq had put in the effort and reaped this result. This will encourage him to step up and I will expect him to go on and break more records next year.” said Mr Ang Beng Siong, Honorary Secretary of Brunei Amateur Swimming Association (BASA). “Haziq will continue to train under Brunei’s Aquatic Head Coach, Mr Eric Landa and together they will work on his next stage of progress. The next South East Asia Age Group Swimming Championships was supposed to be hosted by Cambodia next year. However, Cambodia had proposed to defer the hosting. As Mr Aziz Latip, President of BASA was in Bangkok to support Team Brunei, he offered to take over the hosting. This was unanimously agreed and supported by the rest of the South East Asia countries during the Team Manager’s meeting. “I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 41st South East Asia Age Group Swimming Championships.” said Mr Aziz Latip. “The championships is tentatively scheduled to be in mid to end November next year. This is an important sporting event in the region and we will put up a good show to welcome the respective teams from South East Asia.”
