KOTA KINABALU

The Social Welfare Department Sabah recorded 26,321 persons with disabilities as of November 16 this year, said its director, Mohammad Noor bin Wahab.

Mohammad Noor said cooperation between Sabah Cheshire Home and Services and the Japanese Chamber of Trade and Industry Malaysia (Jactim) would assist the government in its efforts in providing better facilities to disabled persons.

He said this in his speech which was delivered by Social Welfare Department Sabah Planning and Policy Development assistant director Mujin Durin during the handover of a new verandah and roofing at the Sabah Cheshire Home in Likas by Jactim Foundation.

Jactim Foundation sponsored RM25,000 to the home to renovate the verandah and to build a new roofing.

“I hope Jactim Foundation will continue to look east, especially in Sabah because there are a lot more that needed to be done here.”

On another note, Mohammad Noor hoped that other agencies would follow the strategies of Sabah Cheshire Home and Services in providing equal opportunities for everyone, especially persons with disabilities.

He said Sabah Cheshire Home and Services was on the right path in providing certified skills trainings for persons with disabilities and early education with the establishment of a nursery for disabled children.

“The way I look at it, Cheshire Home is a resource centre for persons with disabilities because within its services, you can see early childhood education, residential services, skills training and employment apart from community-based livelihood programmes that they are doing.”

He also said Jactim Foundation had contributed to Sabah Cheshire Home and Services for two consecutive years.

“I praise the efforts and kindness of Jactim and its members for their active participation in strengthening friendship and efforts to help our people, in this case, people with disabilities regardless of race and religion.”

Meanwhile, Sabah Cheshire Home and Services Support Sub-Committee chairman cum Jactim International Cultural Exchange (ICE) Committee chairman Shinsaku Fuzakawa said Jactim Foundation had contributed RM25,000 to build a covered laundry area and purchased several bakery equipment needed for the vocational training for disabled youths at Sabah Cheshire Home and Services last year.

“This year, as proposed by the Cheshire Home, Jactim Foundation disbursed another RM25,000 to sponsor the building of a verandah and roofing to replace their old wooden verandah.

“We hope our support will help contribute towards better quality living environment for the residents with disabilities in the home.”

Jactim was founded in 1983 with the objective of promoting economic relations in the areas of international trade, commerce, industries and investment as well as to serve its ultimate goal of being a bridge between Malaysia and Japan.

Currently, Jactim has about 590 members from various industries in Malaysia.

In order to further strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between Malaysia and Japan, Jactim established the Jactim Foundation in 1994 with the objective to contribute to Malaysian cultural, social and educational development.

The contribution to Sabah Cheshire Home and Services is the foundation’s first social support activities implemented in the state.

Also present were head of Japan Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu, Hiroko Matsuo and vice consul Kunihiko Kato, Jactim secretary general Kanta Kuno, Sabah Cheshire Home and Services president Datuk Rowland Chin, Cheshire Home vice president Lawrence Hee Qui Shing and Cheshire Home manager Jennifer Liew.
