KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA
Brunei Darussalam's Under-12 national team will be looking to avoid finishing last in 16th place in the SuperMokh Cup after falling to an emphatic 5-1 defeat to Iran's Foolad Mobarakeh Sepahan in the classification game between 13th to 16th places at the Maybank Field 'A, Bangi yesterday.
The bottom two teams will square off today with the young Tabuan set to face Uzbekistan's FC Bunyodkor in the 15th place playoff.
Brunei Darussalam Under-12 head coach Stephen Ng reiterated that a lack of experience as the team's major downfall during the lopsided victory for the Iranians.
"Tabuan lost to an Iranian team (Foolad Sepahan) in the classification ranking game due to player's inexperience in maintaining the defensive block," said Ng.
The national juniors managed to minimise the scores in the first half with their opponents' ninth minute goal only separating the two sides.
However, in similar scenes to a three-goal blitz in the Malaysia Panthers defeat in the final Group 'B' game in midweek, the young Tabuan spectacularly capitulated in a space of 10 minutes with a flurry of goals in the 33rd, 35th and 43rd minute.
Tabuan's defender Mohammad Nazry Aiman bin Azaman scored a scant consolation in the 52nd minute before Sepahan completed a 5-1 rout five minutes later.
Ng highlighted that much work in training need to be undertaken back home if they were to compete in the same level with the West Asian players.
"Much work in training will need to be done in the players' development process.
"Hopefully the playing experience here will help our players accelerate their learning process and to work harder in developing their game," he said.
