BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

In continuing its effort to make sure that public areas stay clean, the Law Enforcement Unit of the BSB Municipal Department during a three-day surveillance issued compound fines to four individuals and three companies that were caught disposing rubbish on other people's property red-handed.

Codenamed 'Operas Bersih 41/2016', personnel from the Law Enforcement Unit targeted the Kiulap area where three companies were each levied with a fine of $200 while four individuals were handed a compound fine of $100 each for the offences under the Minor Offences Act.

Under the Minor Offences Act, Chapter 30 of Section 12(1), the storing or disposal of any items in public places is an offence. The company or individual, who is levied a compound fine, must settle the fine within seven days.

If the company or individual fails to settle the fine, the matter will be referred to court and if found guilty, the punishment will be $1,000 fine or a month of imprisonment for the first convicted offence. For a subsequent offence, the punishment will be $3,000 fine or imprisonment of not more than three months.

The Law Enforcement Unit of BSB Municipal Department urged companies and individuals not to dump rubbish on other's property and to maintain the cleanliness of their premises as well as to comply with the various regulations under the Minor Offences Act.

Enforcement personnel will continue to conduct inspections in areas under the department's jurisdiction.
