Headaches may be a sign that your body is missing something. Luckily eating certain foods and making a few lifestyle changes can treat headaches naturally. Taking pills only reduces the symptoms but doesn’t fix the problem.

In this article, we’ll look into natural ways to relieve headaches.

1. Gluten-free diet

Eliminating gluten from your diet can help fight headaches especially if you have gluten intolerance. If you suffer frequent headaches, avoid gluten for a month to see if the frequency of headaches will reduce.

2. Increase intake of magnesium

As we saw in this article, magnesium deficiency triggers migraines. Increasing magnesium intake to 200mg – 600mg a day can relieve headaches. Take magnesium supplements or get it from foods such as leafy greens, nuts, whole grain seeds, chocolate, dairy products and meat.

3. Posture and chiropractic care

Chiropractic treatment can reduce oxidative stress just like antioxidants. Research shows that stress is one of the main causes of headaches. A chiropractor can manipulate and adjust the spine to help relieve stress. Maintaining proper posture can also reduce headaches.

4. Essential oils

You can use peppermint and lavender oil to relieve headaches. Applying peppermint oil on your forehead will cool the skin and increase flow of blood into the forehead.

Lavender oil has long been used to improve mood and treat migraines. Mix a few drops of peppermint and lavender oil and apply them on your forehead, temples and back of the neck.

5. Consume B Vitamins

B vitamins help form neurotransmitters which fight migraines caused by vitamin deficiency. The benefits of taking one B-complex vitamin a day go beyond relieving headaches.

6. Use herbs

Taking butterbur reduces inflammatory effects of chemicals that cause headaches. It also improves flow of blood to the brain. To relieve headaches take doses of 75mg twice a day.

Taking organic supplements that contain feverfew can also relieve migraines and headaches.

7. Detox bath

Detox bath not only cleans your body but it also helps eliminate toxins that may make you sick. This can be as simple as sitting in hot water and toxins will be eliminated as the water cools.

8. Stay hydrated

Drinking lots of water and eating foods with high water content can relieve headaches.

9. Cayenne muscle rub

Cayenne pepper improves circulation and reduces acidity in the body. It is also a powerful headache-reliever since it’s contains capsaicin.

10. Stretching

Sitting on a desk day after day can cause tension in muscles and trigger headaches. Stretching the neck and shoulder muscles will help prevent headaches.
