Water Meter Reader Case Set For January

The Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court has reconvened a case involving a water meter reader of the Public Works Department ( JKR), Ministry of Development.
According to a press release from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the defendant, Haji Ramlan bin Haji Matali, was brought before the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court on one count of charge under Section 165 of the Penal Code (Chapter 22) and one count of charge under Section 35 (1) of the Water Supply Act (Chapter 121).
Represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Pengiran Hajah Suzzana binti Pengiran Haji Abas ,the prosecution had applied to the Magistrate's Court for the charges against the defendant to be read to him.
The first charge read was under Section 165 of the Penal Code (Chapter 22) where investigations conducted by the ACB revealed that on March 1, 2007, at the vicinity of house No 16, Simpang 71-18-9, Kampong Bengkurong, the defendant had accepted for himself money, which amounted to B$1,000 from the tenant of the house, whom the defendant knew to have an outstanding water bill of B$6,794.38 for the water consumption of the house, and has a connection with the official functions of himself as a water meter reader of the Water Services Department whose duty is to inspect and verify the water meter reading of the house.
The second charge read to the defendant was a charge under Section 35 (1) of the Water Supply Act (Chapter 121) where investigations conducted by the ACB revealed that sometime in the morning of the March 1; 2007, he did willfully interfered with the water meter of the house by changing the reader of its water meter with a different one.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The Magistrate, Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Hamid, had set the case for further mention on January 5, 2017, at 10am.
The defendant was previously released on bail on November 12, 2016. The bail was extended by the Magistrate's Court until the date of the next court mention date as stated.
