A foreign teacher at a private school was sentenced to three years and two months in jail after he pleaded guilty earlier this week to sexual assault of an 11-year-old student.

The 52-year-old defendant, whose name is kept anonymous to avoid identification of the victim, held the student's body tight, kissed her lips and touched her chest at the school at 11am on June 2, 2016.

DPP Rozaimah Abdul Rahman's facts of the case revealed that on that morning, the victim was on her way to the washroom when the defendant called her into the library to help pick up some old newspapers and magazines.

As the victim agreed and entered the library, the defendant closed the door behind her and started to sexually assault her as she bent down trying pick up the things as he had instructed.

The victim pulled away and ran back to her classroom where she was found crying by her classmates.

She did not want to say what was wrong until a teacher came by.

The teacher then reported this to the school's principal who then conducted an internal investigation that afternoon, and in the victim's parents' presence, the defendant admitted to his wrongdoing.

Defence counsel Rozaiman Abdul Rahman represented the defendant.

Judge Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Bahar presided over the case.
