BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Wisdom Bowls Club (WBC) of Brunei Darussalam has sent three teams to take part in the inaugural Sabah Open Men's and Women's Pairs Championships at Kota Kinabalu which will be held from December 27 to 31.

Given that the tournament has only been initiated, WBC which will be represented by one senior team and two teams which serve as a fold will not assert high expectations, nevertheless, will put on their best showing.

Opportunities to go far in the tournament, is not impossible even though it looks complicated given that other teams especially the difficulty of facing established Malaysian players from Peninsular Malaysia mainly Kuala Lumpur, PDRM, Kelantan, Perak as well as hosts Sabah.

According to the head coach of WBC, Haji Abdul Ghafar bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laksamana Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohd Taha, "In the competition's men's category in Sabah, teams from the Peninsula and Sabah is considered a selection team. A big part of the players are very experienced and have represented Malaysia at international level competitions".

He further added that youth players from the Federal Territory of Labuan also serves as threat to WBC's hopes to go far.

"Young players from Sabah mainly from Labuan carry the potential to make a surprise, and WBC must be wary with the opposition tactic whose performance has been observed have risen from year to year".

"Nevertheless, the WBC is well prepared for the challenge this time, because in paper, the opportunities for all teams is equal," added Haji Abdul Ghafar.

The pairs tournament is organised by the Sabah Lawn Bowls Association and will be held at the Lawn Bowls Field of the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex.
