The Lao Brewery Company has donated 260 million kip (almost US$32,000) to the Traffic Police Department of the Ministry of Public Security to continue implementing the road safety campaign.

The campaign, which is named “drinking consciously and driving safety”, will start next month and last through the end of 2017.

The donation will be spent on traffic control along roads and other work of traffic police aiming to reduce road accidents and traffic congestion that have been increasing sharply.

The handover ceremony was held in Vientiane Capital on Dec 22 between the President of the Lao Brewery Company, Mr Sounthone Xayacheck and the Head of the Traffic Police Department, Colonel Khamthway Phetouthai.

Some 995 lives were claimed by road accidents in Laos last year with Vientiane topping the list of road accident death toll density, the National Statistics Bureau said in the recently released Statistical Yearbook 2015.

In Vientiane Capital, 237 lives were claimed in road accidents ranking it the area with the greatest number of road accident deaths, followed by Champassak where 110 deaths were reported, and Savannakhet where 105 deaths were recorded.

Comparatively, Vientiane has the highest death toll density with one in every 3,464 people dying in road accidents.  In Bolikhamxay, one in every 4,281 people are killed in road accidents, and in Luang Namtha, one in every 4,512 lives is claimed by road accidents.
