A local woman, a degree holder, was ordered to pay a fine of $900 yesterday by the Magistrate's Court after she pleaded guilty to prostitution.
She was given two weeks to settle the fine, or serve a months' jail term in default.
Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid heard from the prosecution that following a tip-off, Anti-Vice Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department of Royal Brunei Police Force raided a building in Gadong commercial area at 12.36pm on December 19, 2016.
Police found a man and the defendant inside one of the rooms, and that their meeting was previously arranged by the defendant.
Police also found $239 in cash inside the defendant's handbag. Investigations revealed that the defendant had been into prostitution for three years and the sexual services had been provided at the same place where she was arrested.
Revealing the modus operandi of the defendant, the prosecution said, the defendant contacted "clients" using WhatsApp with a code "tusyen", and charged $100 from each client.
She used her earnings to pay for her room rent and daily expenses, the court told.
