JOHOR BARU, MALAYSIA
Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim has been appointed as Regent of Johor and will take charge during Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar’s official visits to several countries.
Sultan Ibrahim said in his decree, read out by Johor Royal Court president Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli, that the appointment was made according to the Johor state constitution 1895.
“Following the advice given by the Johor Royal Court, I appoint Tunku Ismail to be the Regent,’’ he said.
Sultan Ibrahim also said he was confident Tunku Ismail would carry out his duties well in administrating the state.
Under the state constitution, the Sultan has the right to appoint his heir to act as Regent on his behalf when he was absent.
The Ruler will be heading to British Columbia in Canada for an official visit on April 16 and also to London and Japan.
Sultan Ibrahim is expected to return to Johor on May 3.
Sultan Ibrahim witnessed the ceremony held at Istana Bukit Serene here yesterday along with his two other sons, Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris and Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman as well as other members of the Johor royal family and state executive council members.
This is the second time that Tunku Ismail, 32, who is the first in line to the Johor throne, has been appointed as the acting Johor Ruler, the first time being in 2011.
Tunku Ismail received his early education at Sekolah Sri Utama Johor Baru and SRK St Joseph Johor Baru and continued his secondary education at the Australian International School Singapore.
Between 1999 and late 2002, he furthered his studies in Hale School, Perth, Western Australia.
Tunku Ismail, who married his consort Che Puan Khaleeda Bustamam in 2014, underwent military training at the renowned Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, India, from 2003.
He graduated with the rank of lieutenant in December 2004.
He is also the owner of the Johor Darul Tazim (JDT) football team and patron of the Johor Football Association.
Under Tunku Ismail’s leadership, JDT has become a new force in the Malaysian football scene, winning the league titles for two years in a row. Last year, the team become the first Malaysian and South-East Asian team to win the AFC Cup.
