‘Roaster’ Makes Appearance But Quickly Replaced By ‘Rooster’

 The authorities are expected to be meticulous in putting up banners in public, especially with the wordings.

 

An embarrassing situation of wrong spelling of the word ‘rooster’ on a billboard at Sibu Gateway to usher in the Year of the Rooster has boggled the mind of a member of the public. The word ‘rooster’ was spelt ‘roaster’.

 

Though the mistake was rectified a few hours later, the damage to the reputation of the council has already been done.

 

Earlier yesterday morning, a member of the public complained of the wrong spelling and thought it might send a negative signal to tourists in view of the forthcoming Visit Sibu Year 2017.

 

Not wanting to be identified, he said the wrong spelling (‘roaster’) seemed to carry a different meaning, which could mean ‘grilled’.

 

Next year, the Chinese community will bid farewell to the Year of Monkey and welcome the Year of the Rooster.

 

When contacted yesterday, an SMC officer said the situation was rectified in the afternoon.

 

“We have asked the advertiser to immediately rectify the spelling,” the officer said, thanking a member of the public for the concern.
