BINTULU

Seventy-five people are left with only clothes on their backs after fire razed down six wooden houses at Kampung Masjid in Jalan Abang Galau here yesterday.

According to report by the Welfare Department, the victims comprise both adults and children from 16 families.

It is said that the incident occurred around 10am. Bintulu Fire and Rescue assistant superintendent Mohd Ishak said his men managed to put out the flames a few minutes after noon.

“There is no report of casualties,” he said.

Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department chief Di-Hata Gobel also rushed to the scene, located about 4km away from the district station.

Mohd Ishak said his men encountered some difficulties in controlling the situation given the changing winds, as well as the fact that the wooden houses were really close to one another.

“When my men arrived, there were two houses that were in flames. After we put out the fire, we discovered that actually, six houses had been destroyed.

“The narrow lane leading to the village also slowed down the operation, in that it restricted the passage of our big vehicles.

“However, my men managed to control the fire from spreading to other houses and in the process, they saved six nearby houses from being burned down,” he said.
