BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The global economic downturn caused by the drastic drop in oil prices which affects the country's revenue of up to 70 per cent is a blessing in disguise, said the religious authorities yesterday.

This test which affects the nation must be faced with patience and Allah the Almighty promises multiple awards, love, blessings and guidance, Imams said yesterday in the Friday sermon, highlighting on the current Legislative Council (LegCo) Meeting which also touched on the country's economic situation.

They also said the government is still able to finance the development for the well-being of the people and we still enjoy peace and stability and pray that the blessing would last forever and enjoys by the future generation.

During the current LegCo Meeting, Imams underlined the need for the people to not depend solely on the government for the economy and employment.

The people should strive to work harder to gain source of income such as through businesses to generate the economy for the people.

This was also aspirated by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in his titah at the opening of the LegCo Meeting this year which highlighted on the government's efforts to assist to improve the business environment like legal system infrastructure that is pro-business, Imams added.

With the establishment of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Centre, His Majesty said local SMEs would flourish internationally.

Doing business is a decent job to gain Halal income and it is the Sunnah (teachings) of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

This is the opportunity to enhance our potential and answers the government's call to widen the economy through economic diversification instead of relying heavily on oil and gas.
