Someone gave Los Angeles a laugh on New Year’s Day, as people woke up to find the iconic ‘Hollywood’ sign had been improved defaced to read ‘Hollyweed’.
We’re guessing the culprit’s NYE party – and hangover – was probably wilder than yours?
Maybe they’d just smoked a bit of what the sign honoured, or maybe their work was a topical response to the US election on November 8, when the Golden State voted to legalise pot for recreational use by adults.
Even Snoop Dogg was pleased at the alteration, tweeting: ‘Hollyweed – that’s where I get my mail’.
City surveillance cameras captured footage of someone dressed in black about 3am, who police believe was behind the conversion.
He didn’t carry gigantic ‘E’ letters up with him, which would have been quite an undertaking in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Instead, the effect was created by placing material similar to tarpaulin over the two O’s.
There were no suspects identified by this afternoon, but the person is caught they could be charged with misdemeanor trespassing.
This wasn’t the first time the sign had a makeover, and the changes often happen on January 1.
In 1976, artist Danny Finegood hung curtains on the sign to make it read Hollyweed, on the year that the state relaxed their laws on marijuana.
