BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A front desk manager at a hotel in the capital is facing a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine after she pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal breach of trust yesterday in the Intermediate Court.

Norafidah binti Haji Nasir admitted to misappropriating B$29,198.08 of the hotel's money on different occasions between February 27 and June 5, 2014.

Judge Radin Safiee bin Radin Mas Basiuni fid the case for January 10, 2017 to pronounce the sentence.

DPP Yvonne Lim revealed in the statement of facts of the case that the defendant was in charge of the hotel when the general manager was not around during the period when the offences took place.

The hotel's money included cash payments for accommodation and hall rentals.

It was the defendant's responsibility to record the payments and keep copies of receipts and the money in a sate box.

Then the receipts and the money were to be handed over to the accountant. However, the defendant kept the money in her personal desk drawer and brought them home to use for personal purposes.

On June 6, 2014 one of the hotel's managers informed the accountant that collection of rentals and receipts did not tally, following which the management filed a police report leading to the defendant's arrest.

Investigations revealed that the defendant used B$12,000 to pay her debts and the rest for covering other personal expenses.

The defendant paid back some of the money she used on two occasions in June 2014 amounting to $2,720, which is not included in the misappropriated amount.
