Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith on Jan 9 visited Champassak Province where he will officiate the opening of the first Lao-Cambodia International Border Checkpoint which will take place today, Jan 10.
The border crossing is located in Nong Nokkhiane, Champassak Province in Laos and Trapeang Kriel of Stung Treng Province in Cambodia.
The opening of the newly upgraded checkpoint is to facilitate people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, especially between Champassak in Laos and Stung Treng in Cambodia.
In April 2009, the governments of the two countries agreed to upgrade the border checkpoint from traditional to an international level.
The opening of the first international border checkpoint is meaningful to the two neighbours as they are celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year.
Another objective of the Prime Minister visit to the southernmost province of Laos is to learn about production establishments and tourist attractions in the localities.
