Philippines Defeat Brunei in Fencing Championship

The Brunei Open Fencing Championship 2017 saw the finals of the Individual Open Women's Foil and the Individual Men's Sabre categories played yesterday at the Hassanal Bolkiah Indoor Stadium.

 


Ploypailin Thongchampa from Thailand won gold medal for the Open Women's Foil Individual Final after defeating Myanmar's Pyu Pyu Aung 15-14. In joint third place were Sheung Yan Chan from Hongkong and Amirah Sofea Ahmad Fuad from Malaysia.

 


The Individual Men's Sabre Final saw Brunei's Hardiwan Shah Rahim defeated by Eric Brando from Philippines. Joint bronze was landed by Muhd Haziq Asahrin from Brunei and Ralph Justin Mendones from Philippines.

 


The championship will run until January 14, and the Individual Men's Epee and Individual Women's Sabre will be played today.

 


Teams competing in the championship are the Brunei-Muara Team and Kuala Belait Team from Brunei, Blade KL Team, Swash Buckler Team and Sabah Team from Malaysia; Myanmar Team; UE Team, UST Team, and Ateneo Team from Philippines; Chulalongkorn University Team from Thailand; and Fencing Arena Team from Hong Kong.

 


Haji Kassim bin Bakar, President of Brunei Darussalam Fencing Federation presented the medals.
