BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahiawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman has called on all private education institutions in Brunei to establish their respective board of directors, as stipulated in Chapter 210 of the Education Act.

The minister made the remarks yesterday during a swearing-in ceremony for 29 new members of the Board of Directors at Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan (CHMS BSB).

Also present were Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, the Deputy Minister of Education; and YB Ong Tiong Oh, a member of the Legislative Council and the Chairman of CHMS BSB's Board of Directors.

"The selection of the board members is very important in ensuring the efficient monitoring of financial management and infrastructure as well as managing the affairs of both teachers and
students," said the minister.

"The board of directors also functions as an advisor in the strategic planning of the school's progress, in addition to exploring financial resources required to upgrade and enhance the standards of education. All strategic plans should be focused on achieving the institution's vision and goals."

The minister also praised CHMS BSB's performance in the 2016 Primary School Assessment (PSR) examinations, for which the school achieved an overall score of 88 per cent, with the passing marks of Grades A - C at 73.44 per cent.

"The Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs is actively cooperating with the PENGGERAK Unit of the Prime Minister's Office in ensuring that the scores of Grades A to C in the PSR examinations this year, as well in the years to come, meet the target of 90 per cent," he said, adding that he hoped to see CHMS BSB and all private schools in Brunei working towards that
goal.

He urged private school leaders to provide strategic learning and teaching methods to help the country achieve the desired target, for which the Ministry of Education has introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Standard at primary levels.

"The ministry is also making preparations to take part in the 2018 Programme for International Students Assessment (PIS, , which will involve nationwide students of 15 years, including
private schools," he said.

In his appraisal of CHMS BSB's current performance, the minister said he was pleased to see the presence of several non-Chinese students at the school.

"This is relevant to the current and future development of national self-esteem. Educational institutions provide the best foundation in instilling and cultivating life values, shaping self-esteem and the country's development based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) concept,"
he said.

The minister concluded the speech by expressing hope that the new board of directors under YB Ong Tiong Oh would guide CHMS BSB to higher standards of excellence, and closer, ties with the Ministry of Education. He also urged the newly appointed members to provide ideas for the development and progress of the school.

Also in attendance at yesterday's ceremony was CHMS BSB Principal Kho Guik Lan.
