The number of freshmen falling victim to hazing allegedly at the hands of a climbing club of the Indonesia Islamic University (UII) in Yogyakarta continues to increase, with the hospitalization of 10 students.
The Mapala Unisi climbing club freshman orientation program on the slopes of Mount Lawu in Central Java on Jan. 13 to 20 has claimed the lives of three UII students. Thirty-seven students joined the program.
“All participating students have undergone medical checkups. Now, 10 of them need further [hospital] treatment,” UII spokesperson Muzayin Nazarudin told reporters at the Jogja International Hospital in Yogyakarta where the students are being treated.
Muzayin refused give details of students’ medical conditions. “The UII together with the Karanganyar Police [in Central Java] started questioning some participants Tuesday,” he said, refusing to elaborate.
He also said UII rector Harsoyo had suspended the Mapala Unisi club.
