Inclusive Education Policy, where every child or student with special needs must receive the same opportunities similar to their peers has been implemented by the Ministry of Education (MoE) since 1997.
As of now, there are 4,303 students with special needs pursuing their studies at different levels of education. This demonstrates the MoE's dedication in executing the policy in line with the Compulsory Education Policy 2007.
This statement was highlighted by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education, at the launching of the logo and poster, as well as official opening of the Special Education Unit Roadshow held at Mahligai Hall at The Airport Mall in Berakas. The ceremony also had the presentation of certificates to Post Pre-Vocational Programme students with special needs.
The minister also clarified that since the introduction of the Inclusive Education Policy, it has demonstrated a number of triumphs, be it in the scholarly fields or in different ones.
In spite of the fact that the success rates are somewhat small, it has brought about an amazing impact. One of the students with disabilities effectively completed his bachelor's degree in the United Kingdom and is presently working as one of the education officers in one of the primary schools in the country.
In this aspect, the minister proceeded that his ministry always has arrangements and gives several facilities and fitting projects in mind to empower the effort that has been conveyed.
The ministry has given Special Education Needs Assistance (SENA) at practically every primary and secondary school in the country along with Home Room teachers for Pre-Vocational programmes and teacher aides. A total of nine primary and secondary schools have been made into Model Inclusive School (MIS) where the school is furnished with special rooms and other facilities and educational modules especially for practising student's fundamental abilities.
The minister further stated that it is crucial for people to be open and prepared to handle obligations in guaranteeing that all children with special needs receive the same opportunities like what ordinary children would have until they are able to handle themselves and succeed simply like others.
In this regard, the minister supports the endeavours made by the Special Education Unit in hosting roadshow, where the goal is to impart trust in the community especially parents, community leaders as well as teachers that incorporated support needed in order to see results at full potential.
