Special Education Unit Drawing In Awareness with “Every Child is A Gift” Poster Campaign

The Special Education Unit (SEU) under the Ministry of Education yesterday held the official launching ceremony-of the 'Every Child is a Gift' logo and the Inclusive Education Awareness posters.

the 'Every Child is a Gift' logo and the Inclusive Education Awareness posters.
Also present were Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Permanent Secretary (Core Education); Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education; and Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus, Director General of Education.
Haji Ali Yusri bin Haji Abdul Ghafor, Acting Head of SEU in his capacity as the chairperson of the organising committee said SEU is constantly trying to improve the public's awareness and attitudes towards children with special needs.
He said SEU will be introducing and circulating its new posters to schools, mosques, shopping centre and other public areas to share information on the roles and functions of the unit.
He also spoke of the upcoming weekly SEU roadshow that will be held at the beginning of next week at government secondary schools in all four districts until May 2017.
"One way it strives to do is by promoting its fresh motto and logo 'Every Child is a Gift' which is expected to draw the public's attention to the importance of carinfor the child, as well as to emphasise social inclusion and education of students with special needs at home, schools and within the community.”
He added that the logo portrays a sense of harmony and unwavering support for children with special needs and their families especially the parents who play an important role in the development and education of their children.
"The roadshow will provide the schools and parents with relevant information about special education and the available related services so' they can become more aware of what they can do to assist their child to achieve their maximum potential. Complementing this effort will be SEU's open consultation sessions for parents which will be held in all four districts on a weekly basis," he
said.
The open consultation session will be held every Saturday for both Tutong (4th week) and Temburong (2nd week) disricts respectively; while Belait will host the session every Saturday of the 1st and 3rd week of the month. Brunei-Muara District will hold the sessions every Wednesday and every Saturday.
At the ceremony, the Minister of Education handed over certificates to 49 students who recently completed their five-year Pre-Vocational Programme between 2012 and 2016.
The programme is designed to meet the needs of students with severe special needs who have very limited skills in one or more of the following domains; academic, social and communication, physical, sensory and independent living.
This programme is also designed to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities namely,
very low cognitive and academic abilities.
The minister then 'awarded certificates to 16 recipients w
who recently completed their '0' Level and A Level examinations and are looking to gain experience by becoming voluntary teaching assistance.
They are placed at primary schools to help in the management of pre-school students with special needs based on instructions and guidance provided by the school and SEU.
The minister also took a closer look at an exhibition displaying a wide variety of items prepared by students of the Pre-Vocational Programme from 20 secondary schools.
