The recently renamed Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) has just unveiled its new official logo in keeping with its elevated status.

It is a fitting coincidence that the new logo comes into existence in the same year the university celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Awang Haji Ady Syarmin bin Haji Md Taib, Director of International and Public Relations Office of the university, said UTB will start to use the new logo for official events and ceremonies alongside its secondary logo which was revealed earlier this year and is still used on UTB items.

The institution, which offered diploma courses in its early years of establishment, has since expanded to tertiary level education in mostly engineering and technology, including 20 Undergraduate Degree programmes and five Taught Masters, as well as Masters by Research and PhDs.

UTB is also currently finishing out its HND courses.

Although the new logo is a complete redesign containing more features, it has retained one aspect of the old logo, which is a gear-like graphic, depicting modern engineering and concerted teamwork.

The old UTB logo was designed by Dato Paduka Ar Haji Idris bin Haji Abas.

The UTB logo was adapted from original concepts submitted by the joint winners of the UTB Logo Design Competition held on March 8-10 - Dayang Noor Izzati binti Haji Mohd Allinoor from the UTB Mushaf Publication Section and Awang Muhammad Naqiuddin Ihsan bin Awang Mat Japar, an undergraduate from the School of Computing and Informatics at UTB.

The more sophisticated new logo is different from the old one in colour scheme, profile and slogan.

According to Haji Ady Syarmin, the phrase 'Berilmu, Beriman and Berinovasi' (Informed, Virtuous and Innovative) is the slogan for the new UTB logo.

The use of Jawi script on top of the logo symbolises the importance of Arabic writing in Malay history, and its connection with the Al-Quran.

The position of the Jawi script that spreads across the top part of the logo symbolises its dignified status, in line with the national philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).

The Brunei national crest inside the logo symbolises UTB's standing as a public tertiary education institution.
Its position right in the middle of the logo symbolises UTB's support to the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and the country's aspirations.

The shape of the gear, meanwhile, symbolises UTB's identity as a dynamic engineering and technology university. The engineering tool also indicates that UTB is an institution that is prepared to work in harmony with its stakeholders for the benefit of the country.

The letters U, T and B in the inside part of the logo are in a geometric shape which symbolises the effort to shape UTB students as holistic (wasatiyyah) individuals possessing knowledge, moral obligation and proficiency.

The dark blue colour of the lettering was chosen to reflect the characteristics of stability and professionalism.

The colour purple symbolises creativity and innovation while lime green represents youth, vitality and versatility.
