A healthy country is a prosperous one. The health and well-being of the country's citizens and residents is the priority of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. A healthy population that strongly holds onto the religion aside from having high Bruneian values that can become a sustainable and productive human resource in order to increase the country's economic competitiveness and sustainability.

This was touched upon by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, the Minister of Health, in conjunction with the launch of World Cancer Day, yesterday. Also present was Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri (Retired) Colonel Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, the Minister of Energy and industry at the Prime Minister's office as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Brunei Cancer Centre and Brunei NeuroScience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre.

The Minister of Health in the message in conjunction with World Cancer Day stated on average, about 600 people in Brunei Darussalam are diagnosed with cancer yearly and it accounts for more than 20 percent of deaths. Ministry of Health data indicate that more than 1 in 4 Bruneians will be diagnosed with cancer in his or her lifetime. This Year's World Cancer Day themed ' We Can I Can' focused more on raising cancer awareness to the local resident and population.
