A busdriver trapped a thief by shutting his vehicle doors on him, then drove like that to the police station.

The man had stolen from one of the passengers on board, and was about to get away when the doors snapped shut on his torso.

People on the road thought it was accident and tried to prise the doors open, but passengers inside shouted that they should stop as he was being held on purpose.

Video shows the thief stuck in the pneumatic doors, with his jeans-clad legs poking out.

The unnamed driver diverted from his planned route in the Villa Hermosa neighbourhood of Bogota, Colombia, and went to the nearest police station instead.

District police commandant Diego Vasquez said: ‘The driver supported authorities’ work and immediately closed the door so that this man was not able to finish the robbery, and was trapped in the bus instead.’

But the victim, a woman he stole a mobile phone from, decided not to press charges and so police had to release him.

Locals in the district of Ciudad Bolivar where the incident took place said petty crime was rife in the area.

Resident Jose Ovalle said: ‘This is totally common, people are stolen from on buses, in streets or anywhere.

Local media reported that 2017 has seen a steep increase in the number of crimes committed on buses.
