ISB-MoE Maths and Reading Initiative

 February 12th, 2017  |  10:13 AM  |   3220 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A presentation as part of ISB-MoE Maths and Reading Initiative at Sungai Siamas Kampong Ayer Primary School was held by a group of International School Brunei’s (ISB) student and teacher volunteers with the help of the Ministry of Education (MoE). The initiative was the brainchild of Ivan Green, a Secondary Science teacher at ISB who also holds the role of Community Service Manager.

It aimed to provide an outreach programme for primary schools throughout the country. For the ISB Year 12 and 13 International Baccalaureate (IB) students, the programme also fulfilled their Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) obligations, which stipulate that in order to graduate a student needs to perform 150 hours of community service and other activities.

Ivan Green stated that the initiative worked to the mutual benefit of both parties in the sense that young Bruneian learners who need additional help in areas of Language and Mathematics were able to gain individual attention and inspiration from enthusiastic ISB students.

The programme, which began towards the end of 2016, will continue throughout this year. It started with Ivan Green, assisted by the MoE, reaching out to a handful of schools then working with their respective teachers and principals to ascertain where the ISB volunteers could be of help.

"By looking at the curriculums used in the schools as well as the reading levels among their students, we are able to find out how we can work together to help the learners succeed," said Ivan Green.
