A LOCAL start-up based at the iCentre, muBn Learning and Growth Company, with the strong support of DARe (Darussalam Enterprise) held the first part of a two week `Consulting Based Learning for Asean SMEs' (COBLAS) workshop at the iCentre recently.
As part of the ongoing 'Fostering Competitive small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Asean' endorsed by the Committee of Permanent Representatives to Asean, COBLAS is one of the programmes supported by this initiative aimed at assisting Asean SMEs including start-ups and venture businesses in managing their business.
The programme was implemented in Malaysia (National University of Malaysia) and in Myanmar (The Republic of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry: UMFCCI) in 2012 as trial cases through the sponsorship and support of Waseda University and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
The implementation was followed by a workshop held at National University of Management in Cambodia in 2013.
Funded by Japan-Asean Integration Fund ( JAIF), the programme methodology utilises the incubation centres in the region to help improve the productivity of SMEs via consulting services and collaboration with industries' and academics' expertise and know-how of entrepreneurship operations/education.
General knowledge is firstly input on the target country and secondly growth strategies are developed for the business' entrance into a target Asean market.
The Incubation Manager Programme was held for five days and led by the Lead Consultant Professor Takeru Ohe of Waseda University, Japan and his team of international consultants from Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.
The welcoming address was presented by the CEO of DARe Soon Loo, while an insight on the current Brunei business landscape was presented by Legislative Council member YB Hafimi binti Abdul Haadii from the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and the Brunei and Director/Shareholder of LVK Group of Companies.
The programme was attended by local Institutes of higher learning such as Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali, Politeknik Brunei, Kolej IGS, Institute of Brunei Technical Education and Universiti Teknologi Brunei while the SMEs partnered and consulted were ZK Woodshop, Kunyit 7 Lodge, Sahamada Corporation Sdn Bhd and Wira Group of Companies (specific to seafood crackers).
The second part of the programme - Strategy Development Programme is currently being held at the iCentre from February 13 - 16. This focusses on further developing the businesses to penetrate into the Malaysia, Japanese and Singapore markets.
