LJUBLJANA
Slovenia from Friday permitted same-sex couples to have the same rights as heterosexuals, except in adoption and in-vitro fertilization, under its same-sex partnership act.
Slovenian LGBT NGO Legebitra viewed it as an important step and to solve the biggest problem for same-sex couples, Slovenian News Agency STA reported.
The law was passed in April 2016 after a referendum in December 2015 rejected a draft which suggested giving gay couples the right to adopt children.
Since 2006, same-sex couples in Slovenia have the right to register their relationship and 135 couples have been registered so far in the country with a population of two million.
Same-sex couples also are also permitted to adopt children from a partner's previous relationship, but not from others since 2006, STA said.
