PTE Tutong Welcomes New Intake and Begins Orientation Week

Saturday, 25-2-2017, Tutong Sixth form centre (PTE Tutong) welcomed a total of 210 students in its 2017/2018 entry of Year 12 lower sixth students which comprises of 79 male students and 131 female students. Most of the students came from its feeder secondary schools in the Tutong District, although a small number was from other government and private secondary schools. The number is slightly higher this year than the last two years, 194 in 2016 and 199 in 2015.
The Principal, Cg Hjh Murni bte Abdullah, in her opening speech, congratulatedparents and students who have worked hard for their success upon entering the sixth form centre.This year, Mathematics has the highest number of students with 124 students having optedfor the highly versatile A Level subject as one of their subject choices. She further added that a new subject, Travel and Tourism, is going to be offered in the coming year in PTE Tutong as this subject is currently offered in most public and private schools in Brunei.
The Principal also highlighted the importance of English subject as it remains one of the key subjects required to enter higher institutions. It was made clear that it is nowessential for students who are taking IGCSE English to obtain a minimum B grade and credit for English O Level in order to enter higher institutions. Prior to concluding, she emphasized, “collaboration between teachers, parents and students is important in enriching students’ academic experience with background studies and research done both at home and in school to further understand subjects learnt in A Levels.”
The Deputy Principal (Administration) Cg Almasri Hj Sulaiman and Deputy Principal (Academic)Cg Rozieana Haji Zini, also briefed the parents and students regarding relevant matters pertaining to their roles in school. In addition the Students’ Leadership and Character Development Coordinator, Cg.Azrin bin Hj Bolhassan also gave a brief talk regarding the roles and importance of the Student Council in the sixth form.
The event which took place at the college’s multipurpose hall, also marked the commencement of the three-days orientation programme for the 2017/2018 intake, which is scheduled to end on the 1st of March. Among the activities that the students are going to be involved in for the orientation involves team building, ice-breaking, leadership roles that are facilitated by the tutors and students of PTET.
