A 39-year-old Malaysian woman was sentenced to two months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court after she pleaded guilty to a charge for threatening to post indecent images and videos of a man's wife on social media.

The prosecution led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Qamarul Affyian bin Abdul Rahman stated that Hasnah binti Mohamadon February 11, 2017 sent messages through WhatsApp to the complainant, including indecent images of his wife that she threatened to post on Facebook and YouTube if he failed to pay her B$300.

The defendant also instructed the complainant to meet with a Filipino employee at a restaurant she was working in and told him to have the money ready in a sealed envelope the next day.

Alarmed, the complainant immediately reported the matter to the police, which led to the arrest of the defendant. Police investigations revealed that Hasnah used a Malaysian telephone line to contact the complainant and gave the details of her Filipino colleague in order to conceal the defendant's true identity from the complainant.

In her statement to the police, she admitted to all wrongdoings and while pleading guilty to all the charges, the remorseful woman told presiding Senior Magistrate Haji Nabil Daraina bin Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin that she was only playing a- joke with the complainant.

In his consideration while handing down the sentence to Hasnah, the Magistrate took into account the evidences and facts of the case that he said obviously point to a calculated scheme of extortion for financial gain from the complainant.

He said a custodial sentence is necessary for Hasnah to remind the public of the seriousness of the crime.

She was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation which carries imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or a fine, or both.
