A twenty-one-year-old local unemployed man was sentenced to eight months in jail with one whip by the Intermediate Court after he pleaded guilty to housebreaking in order to commit theft.
The defendant, Mohammad Suhaimi bin Mohd Sufri, stole an iPad 2, iPad Mini, iPhone 4 and a digital camera when he broke into a house on Jalan Maulana, Kuala Belait on January 24, 2015.
DPP Danial Kifrawi informed Judge Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Kefli that the defendant broke into the house at about 2am with an accomplice.
As the defendant got hold of the items from one of the bedrooms, house owner Tuker Lines, the Commanding Officer of the First Battalion of the Gurkha Armed Forces, awoke from sleep and noticed the strangers in his house.
"Get out of my house," the house owner shouted, causing the defendant and his accomplice to run out of the house and awakening other members of the family.
Police were alerted when the house owner lodged a report and the defendant was arrested following investigations. Evidence included the defendant's footwear left in the house near an opened window.
