SUMATRA, INDONESIA
Three men have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle almost 2 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine through Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, on Monday.
Kualanamu Airport communication and legal manager Wisnu Budi Setianto said on Monday that there were indications that the three Acehnese men, identified as Marwan, 30, M. Nur, 27 and Ismail, 46, were part of an Acehnese drug ring and intended to smuggle the drugs to Palembang in South Sumatra.
Airport security officers became suspicious of Marwan after noticing he was wearing oversized shoes. “After inspecting the shoes, [airport officers] found 653 grams of crystal methamphetamine in eight packages,” Wisnu told The Jakarta Post.
Questioning Marwan led to his fellow travelers, M. Nur and Ismail, who were reportedly carrying 540 grams and 803 grams of crystal meth, respectively, in 23 packages.
Wisnu said the drugs belonged to someone in Medan, North Sumatra, while each of the three Acehnese men had been paid Rp 5 million (US$375) to transport the drugs to Palembang.
The three men are in Deli Serdang Police custody, he added.
