William Shakespeare was widely regarded as one of the greatest writers and playwrights in the English Language.

The 'Bard of Avon', as he was fondly known, was a role model at a series of one-day workshops held during the Shakespeare Day at Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College (Maktab Duli).

The guest of honour at the event was Haji Rahman bin Haji Nawi, Director of the Department of Curriculum Development at the Ministry of Education, was welcomed to the college by Hajah Monaliza binti Haji Abdul Halim, the Acting Principal of Maktab Duli, as well teachers and staff.

The workshop event had about 300 students participating, with literature as one of their key subjects, from various secondary schools and sixth form colleges in the country.

The event aimed to raise awareness on the importance and relevance of English Literature studies, to provide practical assistance for students studying Shakespeare in their literature examination preparations as works of Shakespeare are included in the 'O' Level, 'AS' Level and 'A' Level English Literature syllabi.

A series of workshops based on Shakespeare's plays will engage the students in discovering new insights, generating different approaches to Shakespearean studies through various practical activities conducted by expert teachers from different schools and institutions.

Stage performances were also presented by the participating schools, organised to encourage a positive attitude towards performing plays in a more practical and educational way.

Albert Polita, Head of the Shakespeare Day Committee, made his welcoming speech after a keynote speech by Dr. Kathrina binti Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Daud, a lecturer from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The event, attended by deputy principals, senior teachers, masters and mistresses of Maktab Duli was organised by the English Department of Maktab Duli's English Language and Literature Department.

Some of the workshops included plays on Anthony and Cleopatra, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night.
