Three schoolboys drowned while swimming in a river at Kampung Inanam Laut here, yesterday.

Haikal Bin Faiz, 10, Shahrizal Bin Azhar, nine, and Mohd Kharil Bin Marisani, 10, died while being treated at the Likas Women and Children Hospital between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said the boys were believed to have gone to the river for a swim after school around 3pm.

“While swimming, one of the boys faced difficulty, prompting his two friends to come to his rescue.

“However, police believed that while trying to save one another, all three victims (drowned) in the river,” he said yesterday.

Villagers who saw the incident immediately informed the police and a team from the Fire and Rescue Department was deployed to the scene.

Haikal was found unconscious about an hour after the incident, followed by Shahrizal about 11 minutes later.

“Mohd Kharil was found unconscious about six minutes later and all the boys were taken to the Likas Women and Children Hospital for treatment,” said Chandra.

Shahrizal and Mohd Kharil were pronounced dead by doctors around 5.30pm, while Haikal died around 6.30pm.

Police have classified the case as a sudden death report as there was no criminal element found at the scene.
