Four stage performances with theatrical plays highlighting the use of different languages in the Sultanate were conducted by 36 students from various faculties of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday as part of the module Variasi Bahasa (Language Variation).
The language varieties include those of the standard Malay language, the vernacular form of Brunei Malay, other local and ethnic dialects, as well as English. Crucial elements of teaching and advices are also infused within the plays in order to give awareness of certain language issues and moral values to the audience.
The first group to perform was Belunu Sdn Bhd with their play 'Si Ambat dan Puteri Si Bujur Sirih' followed by the group Orang Pasar with the same name for their play, titled 'Orang Pasar'.
Another group, Keluarga Har-Murni performed the 'Anakku Gugur Dari UK' and the group Skuad Z showcased a drama titled 'Cinta Dunia Yang Sementara'.
The stage performance was part of a requirement of the Language Variation module, which highlights the practical aspect to the theoretical knowledge about the variety of languages use in Brunei.
The module is conducted by Dr. Hajah Fatimah binti Haji Chuchu, senior lecture at UBD's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), with the assistance of Muhd Najib Noorashid.
A spokesperson said, "From the commencement of this module, all of the undergraduates have been involved and worked together throughout the process of planning, writing script and staging the drama within their respective groups, and later managing the drama event and performing their final products collectively on the stage."
Language Variation (AB-1404) is a Malay-instructed module offered by FASS' Malay Linguistics and Literature programme.
The module aims to disseminate the knowledge of language and linguistics, and to enhance the sensitivity among undergraduates students towards various issues and social aspects related to the language use in the Sultanate.
