Exposure of Local Books in Schools

The Ministry of Education through the Schools Department and Curriculum Development Department has introduced a "Buku Bacaan Inspirasiku" or My Inspiration Reading Book programme that includes the literary works of local clerics and academics. The programme is aimed to raise the spirit of self-esteem for the nation, religion and country as well as love for knowledge from the books read.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Education explained the matter in response to the query on exposure of local books in schools. The Minister of Education explained that the department has identified the themes that are appropriate to be included in the Buku Bacaan Inspirasiku programme, which is from the aspects of Brunei history and development, the sovereignty of Islam, the Sultanate, Education, Economy, Adat Istiadat and Social.
The speciality of the Buku Bacaanku Inspirasiku series is that it includes the literary works of prominent local clerics and academics. It is hoped that students will be inspired by the ideas and thoughts of the writers, to be assimilated and practised in their lives. The programme will involve all students in the primary level, namely Years 4 to 6 and secondary level, from Years 7 to 10 or 11. A number of local books or novels are also used by students, for example at A-levels, local novels entitled 'Hadiah Sebuah Impian' or Gift of a Dream and 'Puncak Pertama' or First Pinnacle, which are modern novels, are used by the students. While at O-levels, 'Hikayat Awang Kamaruddin', the novel - 'pengabdian', the short story - 'Meniti Waktu' and collection of poems - 'Antologi Sajak Cermin Diri', is used, which are all local books.
