National Assembly Elects Thongloun Sisoulith As New Prime Minister

VIENTIANE, LAOS
The National Assembly’s 8th Legislature elected Mr Thongloun Sisoulith as the new Prime Minister on April 20 with the result of 147 approval votes - 99 percent of the total deputies in the legislature.
The newly-elected PM expressed appreciation for the NA’s trust in him to take the important position as Prime Minister of Lao PDR.
PM Thongloun said he is fully aware of the honour and responsibility which was entrusted in him by the Party, State and people.
As the new Prime Minister, PM Thongloun pledged to build his government to be transparent and strong, and further strengthen the existing unity in the government, which will take drastic, creative and effective actions, effectively implementing the resolutions of 10th Party Congress and the National Assembly’s 8th legislature, and do his best to serve the people.
In the meeting, he vowed to listen to opinions and aspirations of nationwide compatriots and do his best to address any shortcomings as well as fulfilling the socio-economic development goals.
He pledged that he would do his best with the goals set under the 8th five-year socio-economic development plan (2016-2020) which aims to ensure that the Lao PDR graduates from least developed country status by 2020.
He took the occasion to call for building and upholding the power of the great national unity, in combination with the power of modern times, towards the goal of having wealthy people and a strong country with democracy, fairness and civilization.
Mr Thongloun submitted a list of nominations for three Deputy Prime Ministers and members of the government to the NA at following working sessions.
