ILIGAN CITY, PHILIPPINES
Protecting the rights of women will be a priority in the agenda of presidential aspirant Senator Grace Poe if she is elected as the country’s 16th –and third woman – President.
This was the promise made by Poe in a campaign meeting here yesterday where she said women’s concerns will be prioritized and they will take a leadership role in government offices.
“They should fight for their rights, they should not let themselves be disrespected. The government should designate an office that will assist these women and the youth,” she said.
She took note that in Asian countries, the Philippines has a high regard for women when it comes to securing jobs.
“But, sadly, women are common victims of violence and trafficking,” she said.
“Hindi naman sapat lamang na lalaban sila. Dapat meron ding kamay sa gobyerno na talagang tutulong sa kanila (It is not enough for them to fight; the government should lend a hand to them),” she stressed.
She batted that the PNP Women and Children’s Desk as well as other offices concerning women should be led by women.
Poe also explained the release of a 30-second video on her official Facebook account vowing her government’s respect to all sectors. She said that was not directed to her closest rival, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who has been under fire over his remark about an Australian missionary who was raped and killed in a Davao prison in 1989.
According to her, the script was made even before Duterte drew flak from due to his “rape joke.”
“It was a coincidence. I’d like to say that it is important to know that we should value respect,” Poe said, implicitly taking a swipe at Duterte.
ROLE MODEL
During her speech at the Plaza Alemania Hotel, Poe called on local officials to support a leader who is a role model and an inspiration.
“Ang Pangulo mismo ay dapat nagbibigay ng inspirasyon, nagbibigay ng direksyon, at nagbibigay ng tamang halimbawa. Iyan po ang dapat gawin ng pangulo. (The President should give inspiration and direction and should set good examples),” she said.
The lady senator said she won’t engage in mudslinging during the final presidential debate in Dagupan, Pangasinan this Sunday.
She appealed to the organizers, attendees and her contenders to zero in on how they will help the people.
VERITAS TRUTH SURVEY
In a related report, Poe topped the Veritas Truth Survey on Servant Leadership Qualities of the 2016 presidential candidates.
In a press briefing, Father Anton Pascual, Radio Veritas president, explained that the respondents were asked to rank the five presidential candidates based on the 10 qualities of a servant leader namely. The qualities are: Listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of the people, and building community.
The results showed that most Filipinos viewed Poe to have the qualities of a servant leader after being at the top spot in nine out of 10 qualities of a servant leader. Poe got an overall percentage of 59 percent.
Poe ranked first nationwide except for the trait pertaining to awareness to which she was ranked last among the five other presidential candidates.
Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago of the People’s Reform Party consistently ranked second in half of the given traits and had an overall percentage of 51 percent.
The standard-bearer of PDP Laban Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Liberal Party bet Manuel “Mar” Roxas tied on the third spot garnering 44 percent.
Nationwide, Santiago and Duterte ranked second and third, respectively, in half of the given traits which includes persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship and commitment to people’s growth.
Vice President Jejomar Binay of the United Nationalist Alliance ranked last in half of the given traits which includes healing, persuasion, foresight, stewardship, and commitment to people’s growth. Binay got an overall percentage of 41 percent of the respondents.
However, Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo stressed that the result of the survey is just a guide to voters and not an endorsement from the church.
“The survey was not done so that the church can say you should vote for this. This was done by Veritas to help the people in assessing the candidates,” he said.
“This is not an endorsement from the church. Rather, the church wants to help people to verify if what other people are saying are true or not, and whether or not they agree with it,” added Pabillo.
The Veritas Truth Survey was conducted by the research department of Radyo Veritas headed by Dr. Clifford Sorita from February to March. The survey was conducted among 1,200 respondents from urban and rural areas nationwide.
Respondents were chosen on the basis of stratified random sampling with +/-3 percent margin of error.
