The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia has disputed the nationality of a man named Karel Duly, who was sentenced by the Magistrate's Court to three months of imprisonment and three strokes of the cane, for entering the country illegally.
Citing the news item, 'Indonesian gets jail time, cane for illegal entry', published on March 22, the embassy stated yesterday that investigations into Karel Duly's background have revealed some bizarre facts.
A man in East Kalimantan whom Karel Duly claimed to be his brother was contacted by the embassy, but he denied any knowledge of him.
The embassy also cited lack of proper documentation and immigration records, to confirm Karel Duly's nationality.
Further inquiries revealed that Karel Duly knew nothing about Indonesia, and spoke the Malay language instead of Bahasa Indonesia.
Despite that, the Indonesian embassy said it was willing to accept that the Bulletin had only published the news item based on what had transpired in the Magistrate's Court.
